At the apex of each civilisationвЂ™s existence, these timeless predators cleanse the Milky Way of advanced organic life, ready for the next cycle. Sovereign tells you how the Reapers were responsible for creating the mass relay network, thereby shaping countless civilisations. Reapers represent an omnipresent, god-like force whose existence is supposedly beyond human comprehension BioWare cleverly uses Saren as a vehicle to showcase the ReapersвЂ™ most terrifying power: indoctrination. Instead, we spend much of our time hunting down Saren Arterius, a rogue agent of the Citadel Council whose fall from grace is nothing short of remarkable.

Our nemesis remains largely illusory until later in the trilogy. ShepardвЂ™s visions from the Prothean beacon on Eden Prime reveal that our galactic forbearers suffered a terrible, mysterious fate, but beyond these scant details, thereвЂ™s little else to go on. Throughout the first game the Reapers are phantoms operating in the shadows, unseen and unknowable. SOS transmissions, found footage from attacks вЂ“ everything you learn about the Reapers comes from the dead. Surely nothing that size could be alive, right?ДЇor the majority of Mass EffectвЂ™s campaign, we only ever hear whispers of their existence. Of course, I didnвЂ™t know at the time that it was a Reaper. A machine god ascending over the crimson skies of Eden Prime, arcs of electricity bending and flickering from its towering metal skeleton. Fighting a Reaper from inside the cockpit of the Normandy would have been a more realistic and direct boss battle.IвЂ™ll never forget the moment I first saw a Reaper in Mass Effect.

There are so many situations in the series where Joker has to do some epic flying with the Normandy and we're forced to sit by and watch it all happen.

I still think the Mass Effect games should have had sections where you fly the Normandy around in aerial combat. Their only intimidation factor became their size. Instead they became these big sluggish robots that could be blown up with well directed conventional weapons, including a handheld gun at one point. The way they were introduced in ME1 they were virtually unstoppable godlike beings, they should have taken Earth easily in a matter of hours if not minutes. Not to mention the Reapers were seriously demoted in strength for ME3. So instead they toss out lots of embarrassingly weak minions at you to give you something to do. They're the main antagonist in the series and it's impossible for you to actually fight them directly. That being said I think they're an odd villain for Mass Effect, a series revolving around small scale cover based combat, and dialogue.

It's cool the way they descend upon planets like these godlike hands of death. I think the Reapers are a neat enemy in concept.
